What is e-Invoicing?

Electronic invoicing adoption is expanding rapidly across jurisdictions worldwide. Instead of sending PDF invoices by email, e-invoicing uses structured data formats that can be automatically processed by accounting systems on both ends of a transaction.

FatturaPA for Italy

FatturaPA is Italy's mandatory electronic invoicing format. Italy was one of the first EU countries to mandate e-invoicing for all B2B and B2C transactions, and FatturaPA is the required format for all invoices issued in Italy.

FatturaPA invoices are routed through the government's SDI (Sistema di Interscambio) system. The SDI acts as a central hub that receives, validates, and forwards electronic invoices between parties. This requires prior registration with the SDI system before you can begin sending electronic invoices.

The PEPPOL Network

Getting Started with e-Invoicing in Italy

Each jurisdiction requires specific mandatory fields for electronic invoice validation. For Italy, ensure your Invoice Ninja account has the following properly configured:

  • Codice Fiscale (Italian tax code)
  • Partita IVA (VAT number)
  • Complete company address details
  • Correct tax rates and categories for your line items
  • Codice Destinatario (SDI recipient code) for your clients

Important: Italy requires government registration with the SDI (Sistema di Interscambio) system before you can send electronic invoices. FatturaPA invoices are routed through this government system, so prior registration is mandatory.
